I love this painting, it holds so many lovely memories which began on a sailing trip to the Outer Hebrides. During our sail back from Harris to Gairloch we headed to the beautiful remote Shiant islands. The islands offer very little shelter to passing boats so we decided to anchor in the most sheltered bay for a brief visit. We had a settled spell of weather which enabled us to drop anchor and marvel at the spectacular natural world before us.

The air was full of seabirds birds of various species including countless puffins. I’ve never seen to many!

I decided to head ashore to explore and sketch. I was able to land on a low lying pebble beach which joins the two main islands. Just on the other side of the beach an old dwelling came into view, and beyond I could see the northern peninsulas of Skye. Such an isolated place but I was very privileged to spend the afternoon here. I quickly found a sheltered place to sketch and absorb my surroundings. This painting is a result of that very special day.
